No 24 First Avenue, Walmer had been standing derelict for years. It had originally been designed as a stately home, and had since been used as a commercial nursery in the 1990’s, a restaurant pub in the early 2000’s and had then stood empty for 10 years. Development had progressed around the site, and it stood there awkwardly, on its large overgrown site. A rather dismal welcome or gateway to the suburb of Walmer, with its vibrant residential streets, a vibrant township, and trendy coffee shops and restaurants.
A client for whom we have done numerous buildings for, asked if we thought it was a good idea to buy it and do something with the land. We jumped at the opportunity to convince her to keep the original building as part of the development and create a courtyard/ street around it. Her brief consisted of the following- A restaurant/ Coffee shop, an interiors showroom, a factory shop/ warehouse, a few smaller boutique like shops.
